    המושג העדפה חברתית מתאר טעמים או העדפות של חברה. המושג בחירה חברתית מתייחס להתנהגות החברה. דהיינו לבחירה של אחת מאפשרויות הפעולה העומדות בפניה. דיון בנושא ההעדפה והבחירה החברתית הוא רלוונטי ובעל חשיבות רבה לתחומים שונים במדעי החברה, ובפרט לכלכלה. לימוד הנושא מחייב היכרות עם כמה בעיות קשות ומעניינות. המטרה העיקרית של הספר הזה היא להבהיר את הבעיות המרכזיות הללו ואת חשיבותן.
